Little Britain and Extras Actors to Star in Comedy at The Sherman

Little Britain and Extras Actors to Star in Comedy at The Sherman The Sherman Theatre Company are delighted to announce a production of Educating Rita at The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff from Thursday 1 – Saturday 17 June, starring Ruth Jones, best known as Kelly in Fat Friends and Little Britain’s long suffering barmaid Myfanwy, and star of Extras and Doctor Who, Steve Spiers.

Educating Rita, written by Willy Russell, is the story of a young, brash hairdresser who decides to take lessons from English Literature professor Frank. As Rita discovers a passion for literature and learns to value her own insights, Frank begins to question his own understanding of his work and himself.

Director Phil Clark comments, “Educating Rita is a fantastic story that remains as relevant today as it did in the twenty years ago – Rita is a strong, young woman who demands her right to knowledge and equality. We’re setting the play in modern day Cardiff which will really bring Rita and Frank to life to today’s audience.”

Ruth Jones, who was born and grew up in Porthcawl and trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama has appeared in numerous television shows including Fat Friends, Nighty Night and Little Britain. Famous for playing Myfanwy in Little Britain, the long suffering barmaid who listens to Dafydd’s moans about being ‘the only gay in the village’, Ruth will be making her professional Welsh theatre debut playing Educating Rita at The Sherman.

“The last and only time I performed at The Sherman was in 1984 in a National Youth Theatre of Wales production of As You like It. I played a bunny girl. Don’t ask…Anyway, I’m really excited about it. And so is my mother. She’s planning to bring a bus load from Porthcawl!” Ruth laughs, “I love Educating Rita – Rita is such a fun, exuberant character and I’m really looking forward to working with Steve who as well as being a brilliant actor, is an old friend. Which always helps…”

Steve Speirs, who has recently finished filming Pirates of the Caribbean 2 with Johnny Depp, was born in Troedyrhiw and has appeared in Dalziel and Pascoe, Doctor Who and as the infamous ‘Dullard’ with Ricky Gervais in Extras.

Phil Clark continues “Both Ruth and Steve are immensly talented actors with a natural ability to bring humour to characters – I’m thrilled they are both involved.”

Educating Rita will be on at The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff from Thursday 1 – Saturday 17 June. There will be an opportunity to meet the cast after the show on Wednesday 7 June. Tickets, priced £7 - £15 are on sale now and can be booked from Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
