Performance on: Wednesday 31st May * 7.30pmUnder the banner of their own company, Re:Act, final year students from Swansea Institute's Performing Arts and Theatre BA Honours Degree Course present a modern, original, serious drama by Timberlake Wertenbaker, The Love of the Nightingale, combining elements of Greek myth, history and classical Greek drama. Thisplay is a contemporary retelling of an ancient myth based on Sophocles' lost play Tereus, The Love of the Nightingale is a searing drama about the brutality resulting from enforced silence, as dramatized by a playwright who has received high praise for her poetic treatment of social issues. Wertenbaker emphasizes themes of sisterhood, sexual politics, violence, and healing. An explosive mixture of ethics, politics and feminism, the play takes an uncompromising look at the issue of voice and power: who speaks, and for whom; who is heard and who is silenced. The Love of the Nightingale "...that rare thing, a compelling piece of theatre which may indeed rivet you to your seat...a raw piece of myth making for a violated age." The earliest version of Philomele and Procne was in Sophocles's Tereus, written around 430 B.C. Yet here, in a version adapted in the mid -1980s, the themes are still alive and relevant - in wars on television, through the media and politics, in cries that are silenced in the night, that says "Silence the question, cut out the tongue" and "Where have all the words gone?" This, the final major performance by the students prior to graduation and with all tickets £7.00 (£5 concessions) you can easily grab a piece of theatrical drama and support young emerging talent as well.
