FROM 'JACK' TO 'JACK

FROM 'JACK' TO 'JACK Doctor Who star John Barrowman has been lined up to headline this year's New Theatre, Cardiff pantomime Jack & the Beanstalk.  The TV favourite won't have much of a name change to conjure with as he moves from the top sci-fi programme's Captain Jack to pantoland's Jack Trot.

Though the show doesn't open until 16 December, theatre staff are already geared up for huge interest in the show.  With Doctor Who being the TV sensation of the past couple of years, interest is expected to be very high when the show goes on sale on Tuesday 9 May.

John played Captain Jack in five of BBC Wales' first series episodes and is rumoured to appear in some of the second season ones too.  He is currently filming a spin-off series, Torchwood, set in Cardiff and to be screened later this year.  Earlier in 2006 he was also seen in ITV1's popular Dancing on Ice series and BBC1's The Sound of Musicals.  However his successes span more than TV.  In the West End last year he was seen in A Few Good Men alongside Rob Lowe and has also appeared in Sunset Boulevard in both the West End and on Broadway.  An accomplished singer, his most recent CD is called John Barrowman Sings Cole Porter.

Taking to the New Theatre stage for 71 performances over a six week period he will climb the beanstalk, do battle with the giant and save the day 71 times!  In this he will be joined by Welsh comedy favourite Andy Jones as Muddles and Capital Gold's Tony Wright as his mother, Dame Trot.

New Theatre Manager, Susan Lewis, said "We couldn't be happier to welcome John to pantoland this Christmas-especially in our centenary year.  The New Theatre's panto is always the biggest and best in Wales and with John on board audiences are in for something extra special.  As Doctor Who is one of the country's top TV programmes, we expect lots of interest from fans across the UK.  We advise that Cardiff people book up early to avoid missing out!"

Jack & the Beanstalk will be at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Saturday 16 December 2006 to Saturday 27 January 2007. Tickets are on sale from 9 May with prices from £7.50.  They can be booked via the Box Office on (029) 2087 8889 or online at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk from that date.
