Sex has never been funnier or more poignant than in The Vagina Monologues, the hit show that returns to the New Theatre for one week from Monday 15 May. This collection of highly original stories about women, their strengths and their fears, was gathered by the show’s dynamic creator, New Yorker Eve Ensler. Ensler asked over 200 women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and walks of life to share their most intimate secrets in ‘vagina interviews’ on such normally taboo topics as birth, sex, orgasms and relationships with truly revelatory results. These interviews provided the material for the now internationally renowned stage show The Vagina Monologues. Three female performers regale the audience with a fascinating, hilarious, engrossing, moving and occasionally outrageous collection of stories about being a woman in the modern world. As sharp and witty as Sex and the City, as unmissable as Friends and as funny as Smack the Pony, the show is performed by three amazing women who appear on stage together throughout the evening. Some of the world’s most successful women have taken part in The Vagina Monologues around the world including Kate Winslet, Glenn Close, Gillian Anderson, Whoopi Goldberg, Honor Blackman, and Maureen Lipman. The Cardiff cast includes Newport-born Josie D’Arby. Josie has presented numerous television shows from CBBC to Top of the Pops and written and performed her own stand-up comedy shows. As a RADA graduate Josie also has plenty of acting experience, starring as the rookie WPC Jodie Flynn in BBC drama Merseybeat and as part of the spoof presenting team on BBC2’s cult Tomorrow’s World pastiche Look Around You. The New Theatre performances will also feature actress Hannah Waterman, daughter of Dennis, a familiar face to millions from 4 years on EastEnders as Laura, Ian Beale’s ex-wife. Completing the trio is Lesley Nicol, a superb comedy actress whose credits include Dinnerladies, East is East and as Kim Cattrall’s aunt in the recent Tetley Tea ads! The Vagina Monologues has been critically applauded receiving prestigious nominations for Drama Desk and Obie awards in 1999 in New York, and a nomination for the 2002 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment. The show is a global phenomenon with multiple productions in over 25 countries and open-ended runs in New York and Paris. The Vagina Monologues is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Monday 15 to Saturday 20 May. Tickets are on sale now, with prices from £7.
