Ballet meets jazz in Northern Ballet Theatre’s sizzling I Got Rhythm, showing at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 23 to Saturday 27 May 2006. Northern Ballet Theatre, the UK’s number one narrative dance company, is renowned for captivating audiences with a distinctive and innovative blend of classical dance and theatre. I Got Rhythm is a two-act programme of skilful and exuberant dance, live music and vocal performances, set to some of George and Ira Gershwin’s most enduringly popular songs. This stunning production is a unique opportunity for all the dancers to showcase their talents as they bring universal favourites like Rhapsody in Blue, Summertime and Girl Crazy vividly to life. American brothers Ira and George Gershwin formed a perfect musical partnership in the early twentieth century. The combination of Ira’s witty lyrics to George’s jazzy compositions produced a wealth of hits for theatre and film and featured in such international hits as An American in Paris and A Star is Born. The Northern Ballet Theatre Orchestra performs these incredible numbers ‘big band’ style, on stage alongside the company’s dancers and acclaimed guest singers Geoffrey Dolton (Baritone) and Simone Sauphanor (Soprano). Renowned concert pianist Jonathan Scott will reprise his masterful performances of Gershwin’s signature piece Rhapsody in Blue. In his fifth season with Northern Ballet Theatre, I Got Rhythm is directed and choreographed by the company’s Artistic Director, David Nixon. He comments, “when I took over the directorship of NBT I hoped this production would become part of the repertoire. I felt it would bring a new style to the company, provide opportunities for each and every dancer to show their talents, and showcase the Orchestra who are often unsung heroes at the ballet. Jazz specialist Dollie Henry joined me in rehearsals this time to help the dancers with the references to the jazz styles, an experience which will bring new inspiration to the performances.
