Four very different ballet productions are soon make their way to Wales Millennium Centre combining an interesting mix of traditional, playful and modern ballet which will entertain both a young and old audiences. The line-up will include Norwegian National Ballet’s only UK performance of their new production of The Sleeping Beauty, the all-male ballet ensemble Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s delightful La Fille mal gardée and Independent Ballet Wales’s The Canterbury Tales. Wales Millennium Centre’s Programming and Marketing Director Fiona Allan says, “Over the next three month period we’ll have four completely different ballet programmes at WMC. For those who haven’t seen ballet before, I promise we can convert even the most dedicated armchair sports fanatic to a ballet maniac. From fairytale magic of The Sleeping Beauty, to the panto-like antics of La Fille mal gardée and the hairiest chests you’ll ever see in a tutu with The Trocks - now is definitely the time to take advantage of the starting price of just £5 tickets for the shows in the Donald Gordon Theatre and see world-class productions right on your doorstep.” The first production to show at WMC is Independent Ballet Wales’s charming new production of Geoffrey Chaucer’s classic, The Canterbury Tales, on Saturday 17th June in the Weston Studio. Here we have a group of men and women on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury, recounting The Canterbury Tales to pass the time and bringing Chaucer's motley crowd of characters alive. Norwegian National Ballet’s traditional fairy-tale performance of the iconic classical ballet The Sleeping Beauty will soon follow from 21-25 June, full of elegance and style which is set to blow you away. Norwegian National Ballet, directed by Espen Giljane since 2002, is one of the most exciting ballet companies in Europe and is Norway’s first and only classical ballet company. La Fille mal gardée, showing at WMC from 11-15 July, must be the oldest ballet still in repertoire and is packed with dancing chickens, a Shetland pony and colourful folk dances. One of Sir Frederick Ashton’s best-loved ballets, La Fille is a romantic comedy and is as fresh as it was when this version was first premiered in 1960. The final spectacle to grace the Welsh stage is Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo from 22-26 August, a show which comprises 15 hairy-chested men in tutus and size 12 ballet shoes. Best known as The Trocks, this playful and entertaining show will have you in fits of laughter as the all-male troupe with their garish make-up, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces.
