A brother and sister are abandoned by their parents. They are captured by a witch who plans to cook and eat them. But the witch gets shoved into an oven where she's burned alive. This is a story for children? You bet it is and has been for a long time. This is Spectacle Theatre’s new project - ‘Under a Moonlit Tree’, which is an imaginative retelling of the Grimm’s fairytale of Hansel & Gretel. Using mask, life-size puppets and the skill of the actor, Steve Davis’ expert direction has made a classic tale work superbly by relating the story to today's mindset through the inclusion of a discussion session prior to the performance which poses the questions: ‘Why do we tell stories?’, ‘What are they for?’, ‘What kind of stories do we tell?’. A mask making session follows the play to explore the concepts of transformation, diversity and choice in everyday life, with, of course, the possibilities being endless. ‘Under A Moonlit Tree’ is currently touring to schools until July. The company has also been invited to perform the play at the SprOg Children’s Theatre Festival in Ireland in August before going on to tour internationally.
