On Saturday, 8 July, as part of the Summer Shift 2006 - CPR’s international summer school - Brisbane-based Frank Theatre are performing, HAMLET STOOGED, their own high-energy version of Shakespeare’s tragedy.Frank Theatre are renowned for their innovative, visually stunning theatre using minimal cast and minimal props. The company specializes in “Suitcase” theatre, enabling them to tour around the world. HAMLET STOOGED is a modern, urban update on the classic Hamlet, focusing on his madness and inner turmoil through a series of bizarre dreams and nightmares. Writer and performer John Nobbs has paraphrased Shakespeare making him bump into The Simpson’s, glance at Wayne's World and go to bed with A Clockwork Orange to deliver a tormented performance of Hamlet as he struggles with modern day dilemmas such as Game Boys and the horrors of fast food. HAMLET STOOGED is packed with all the rhythm, rhyme and intensity of a Shakespearean production, only the words have changed to reflect the world in which we live. In particular, performers Ira Seidenstein draws on his Cirque due Soleil background as the Russian Joker and Leah Shelton performs a Gothic Cabaret style Ophelia. The show includes a pop and rock music soundtrack that boasts Public Image Limited, Tokyo Shock Boys and the original sixties version of the Locomotion. Frank Theatre are in Aberystwyth to lead a workshop on their own Frank/Suzuki Performance Aesthetics, 1 – 5 July as part of the CPR Summer Shift, a highly acclaimed actor training method. HAMLET STOOGED will be performed on Saturday 8th July at the Castle Theatre, Aberystwyth.
