Looking Out To See

Looking Out To See Acting Out Cardiff, Cardiff Schools Service and The Sherman Theatre’s out of the classroom education project, continues to go from strength to strength this year with a poignant play about a group of teenagers and their dreams, fears and aspirations.

Acting Out Cardiff, which won the Youth Work in Wales premier award for their production No Man’s Land in 2004, will perform Looking Out To See, a moving play written especially for youngsters by acclaimed playwright Charles Way.

The Acting Out Scheme, aimed at teenagers aged 14-16, takes young people out of the classroom and gives them hands on experience in a professional arts environment. Learning skills covering all aspects of the arts including performance, scriptwriting and stage combat the teenagers achieve a BTEC in Performing Arts at the end of the 2 year course. Acting Out Co-ordinator Jess Naish comments:

“Acting Out is a fantastic project that we are so proud of here at The Sherman. We’ve just had our third group of teenagers graduating from the course, and each we year we see the most amazing teenagers grow and develop, not just as performers but also as people.”

Looking Out To See is the story of a group of teenagers from a Youth Centre in Cardiff who go on a trip to Skomer Island. Whilst there, the teenagers find themselves facing their deepest fears, dreams and aspirations. Michael Regan, 16 from St Mellons who has just graduated from Acting Out and is performing in Looking Out to See comments:

“Acting Out has changed me completely. I’m hoping to go to college in September, which I’d never considered before doing Acting Out. Now, I’m more focused and determined about what I want to do. Looking Out To See is about young people, just like us in the cast, finding out who they are and having something to live for.”

Acting Out Cardiff will perform Looking Out to See at The Sherman Theatre on Thursday 13 July – Friday 14 July at 7pm. Tickets can be booked from Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
