Tutus, tights, tiaras and… testosterone

Tutus, tights, tiaras and… testosterone Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, or The Trocks as they are affectionately known, hairy men in tutus – are the foremost comedy act in the dance world today and anyone who fancies a good laugh whilst watching squabbling ballerinas trying to hog the limelight should race to Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) to see one of the funniest shows ever to hit Wales.

Performing at WMC for 5 nights from 22 to 26 August 2006, The Trocks, who are fresh from touring the world bring their music, magic, mischief and mascara to Cardiff.  16 hairy chested flamboyant men complete with arm pit hair flutter their false eyelashes as they perform a series of classic ballets, and just because the gorgeous tutus and tiaras are worn by men, don’t think for one minute its not the real thing.

Fiona Allan, WMC’s Marketing and Programming Director says, “Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo brings to life some of the greatest moments in classic ballet, though perhaps not in the way great choreographers would have imagined!  The frocks are fabulous, the make-up is extreme, this will be a performance of classic dance, a stunning evening of theatre and the funniest night you’ll ever have at the ballet.”

The show features extracts from favourites such as Les Sylphides, Raymonda and Swan Lake, a hilarious homage to classical ballet, with more than a pinch of naughtiness.  Treading a fine line between high art and high camp the dancers performance is so convincing that you may actually forget they are men.

Swan Lake is their signature work and here the comedy is broader than Odette’s shoulders.  The Swan Queen is squeezed into a white tutu, with her sprouting chest hair; she flirts shamelessly with the campest of princes.

Founded in New York in 1974, The Trocks have established themselves as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world. The Trocks have appeared in over 500 cities worldwide and the 2004/2005 tour marked the company’s 30th anniversary which included performances at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Expect a hilarious night of stroppy ballerinas, runaway egos, diva glamour and eccentric behaviour.  Come and see how these strapping macho men are transformed into an ensemble of delicate ballerinas.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
