Sgript Cymru’s latest production Orange is a raw and urgent rollercoaster by new writer Alan Harris. Set against the background of the conflict in Iraq it is a powerful, character based play that questions the true meaning of freedom. In the confines of a Cardiff bed-sit we are asked – who is the real prisoner?

Sharp witted Saleem must talk his way out of captivity before it is too late. His captors are angry, ‘It’s an eye for an eye’ vows Chippie, but will the kidnappers push it all the way, or will someone make it right? Time is ticking as freedom and futures hang in the balance.

Writer Alan Harris describes his ideas behind the play,

“I wanted to explore the idea that many people, even those, in high authority, fool themselves. It's the idea that someone can convince themselves they are doing something good when, in fact, they are doing terrible harm.
I knew the kidnap victim immediately. I didn't want him to be just a victim. Even though he is bound and imprisoned he still has a weapon - his words. The other two characters have a difficult relationship, not only with each other but with their captive. Again it goes back to the concept that they can only be free when they admit to themselves, and to each other, who they really are.”

Orange will be performed at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff from the 6th to the 23rd of September 2006.
