Great Drama at The Riverfront this autumn

Great Drama at The Riverfront this autumn The Riverfront promises an exciting assortment of entertainment on the drama front to suit all tastes this autumn, starting with the National Youth Theatre of Wales and AN INFORMER’S DUTY. To celebrate its 30th birthday, the award-winning NYTW will be performing this drama set in Russia in the 1930’s. This extraordinary play brings to dramatic life the 5th Symphony by Shostakovich, which is central to the action of the play.

THE GARDEN, a moving story inspired by The Lost Gardens of Heligan comes next. When Jay returns from Bosnia to clear out his great-uncle’s house, he discovers family repeating itself as first tragedy and then farce. The garden is a moving story of love lost and found, shell-shock and the power of memory. Next is a fabulous performance in Welsh, BITSH which is an adaptation of the novel by the same name written by Welsh writer Eurig Wyn.

Kenneth Branagh’s multi-award winning comedy THE PLAY WHAT I WROTE arrives in October with a celebration of Britain’s greatest comedy double act Morecambe and Wise. When the show opened in London’s West End, every single review was a rave, every show a sell-out and it won every major theatre award. The only show with a surprise celebrity guest at every performance...which celebrity will come to Newport?! This is your only opportunity to see this wonderful production in Wales this year!

Mike Maran makes a welcome return visit following his sell-out show of Don Camillo. This time, Newport welcomes him to perform CAPTAIN CORELLI’S MANDOLIN. Set on the Greek Island of Cephalonia from the Second World War to the present day, this is a passionate story of love that sweeps you up one minute then makes the fright and rage of war boil in the stomach the next.

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES will come to Newport for the first time in November. Based on author Eve Ensler’s ‘Vagina Interviews’ conducted with women from around the world, these witty and moving tales give voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, brave and thoroughly human stories. As sharp as Sex and the City, as unmissable as Friends and as funny as Smack the Pony!

Network of Stuff present THE UNSINKABLE CLERK, a hilarious yet strangely moving tale of two men who find themselves thrown together in the belly of a whale and their adventure to a waterfall at the edge of the world. A production full of magic, absurd images, hard decisions and a flotilla of rubber ducks!

Add last but not least in an autumn season jam-packed with something for everyone, there’s The Riverfront panto...CINDERELLA which promises to be a pantomime to remember. Join Cinderella, the ugly sisters, the Baron and Baroness Hardup and of course, Prince Charming in this traditional story of pumpkin and glass slipper, good and evil, gold digging and true friendship. Starring Welsh Bafta winner Brian Hibbard as one half of the Ugly Sisters and all round entertainer and panto favourite Isla St Clair as The Fairy Godmother, Cinderella has already sold so well that an extra week of performances has been added to the run!
