NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE WALES CELEBRATES ITS 30TH BIRTHDAY

NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE WALES CELEBRATES ITS 30TH BIRTHDAY This August, 60 members of the National Youth Theatre Wales are rehearsing in Aberystwyth before embarking on a Wales wide tour celebrating 30 years of promoting and supporting young artistic talent in Wales.

Over 200 young people between the ages of 16 and 21 took part in auditions around Wales to take part in this years production - an annual fixture on the Welsh cultural calendar. Last week they took up their 4 week rehearsal residency in Aberystwyth and spend another week on tour around Wales, finishing at the Riverfront (8th and 9th September.

This year is special for Hanna Jarmen (17) and her family, from Cardiff. This is her first year with the National Youth Theatre of Wales; however her mother, Nia Caron was a founder member of the National Youth Theatre of Wales in 1976.

The National Youth Theatre of Wales celebrates its 30th Anniversary this
year with a production of An Informer's Duty written and directed by
Greg Cullen. This bi-lingual production brings to life the astonishing 5th Symphony by Shostakovich, which is central to the action of the play. With a cast of 45 performers the NYTW is touring Wales this September with a first-class theatre production that only a national company can achieve. (Aberystwyth Arts Centre, 1st and 2nd September, Pavillion Theatre, Rhyl, 5th and 6th September, The Riverfront, Newport, 8th and 9th September)

Written and directed by NYTW artistic director, Greg Cullen, AN INFORMERS DUTY brings to life the work of a composer in less than perfect times.

Set in Russia in the 1930's, and in the middle of the night, a shy awkward man sits with a suitcase at the foot of his stairs so that when the police come for him they won't wake his wife and child. The mans name is Dimitri Shostakovich, probably the greatest composer of the 20th century.

With a cast of 45 performers, this bi-lingual theatre experience works hard to create a visual and aural epic from Greg Cullen's celebrated play.
