The world’s first ever tour of the Roald Dahl classic Danny the Champion of the World, commences at the New Theatre on Tuesday 19 September, shortly after the celebrations for the inaugural Roald Dahl Day on Wednesday 13 September.First published in 1975, Danny the Champion of the World tells the story of a young boy who lives in a caravan with his Dad, the most marvellous and exciting Dad any boy ever had. But his father has a secret! When night comes, he poaches pheasants from Hazell’s Wood. Mr Hazell, the biggest landowner in the district, wants to evict them both and the battle is quickly on to save their home. But how can one little boy defeat a rich and powerful landowner? Danny has a plan - and soon he and his Dad are caught up in a thrilling and remarkable adventure! Although a firm favourite with children the world over, Danny the Champion of the World has never toured the UK, until now. This tour is produced in conjunction with the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff and The Birmingham Stage Company, the leading producers of top-class family entertainment. The talented cast is lead by Iain Ridley as Danny, who appeared as Michael in Kensuke’s Kingdom at the New earlier this year and Welsh actor Dafydd Emyr as Danny’s father, last seen at the New in Hamlet. The tour is directed by the Artistic Director of the Sherman Theatre, Phil Clarke. Roald Dahl is Britain’s most successful and biggest-selling children’s author of all time, selling more than 50 million paperback copies in the UK. His darkly comic tales have thrilled and entertained generations of children and continue to do so, his work selling over 4 million copies in the past 12 months alone. To acknowledge Dahl’s undisputed contribution to children’s literature and his enduring popularity, the first ever Roald Dahl Day is being held on what would have been the late author’s 90th birthday, 13 September 2006. Organised by the Roald Dahl Literary Estate, supported by Puffin Books and Random House Children’s Books, events are taking place all over the UK and beyond. As a prelude to the opening of the Danny tour at the New, the theatre is proud to host a special event with members of the cast, including a sneak preview of one of the show’s scenes. Lucy Dahl, Roald’s youngest daughter, will also be at the event discussing her life with her famous father. Danny the Champion of the World is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 19 to Saturday 23 September.
