Fiery start for new play

Today rehearsals began in earnest at Aberdare House for Estella’s Fire, the new play by Louise Osborn, brought to you by Hijinx Theatre. After four weeks of rehearsal, the show will tour for 10 weeks to small scale venues across Wales and England.

Writer Louise Osborn said:
“This play is based on the iconic characters from Great Expectation, and here in this play Estella becomes the heroine.  I think that Estella’s Fire would appeal to everyone - children and adults. It is, essentially a love story between two young people - a story of redemptive love in the face of cruelty and abuse.”

Estella’s Fire examines what would happen if, through force of circumstance, a three-year-old girl was given away by her natural mother, and sent to live with an eccentric old woman whose main purpose is to seek revenge for her own grievous betrayal, by teaching her charge to despise, fear and break the hearts of men.

Deprived of the company of other children Estella is kept in the dust-laden candlelight and darkness, locked away from the world, in a house where time stands still. In this situation, her passion for freedom begins to take her on an emotional journey.

Estella’s Fire explores this strange and unnatural world where everything is far from ordinary, and where the buried dreams of a young girl are awakened by the arrival of 'the boy' from beyond the gate.

Hijinx are reunited with their first artistic director, Rosamunde Hutt, who first began her association with Hijinx in 1990. Tickets are on sale now for this exclusive tour of Estella’s Fire, which is a fantastic opportunity to see Hijinx’s community play in their silver 25th birthday year.
