Sherman’s Education Manager adapts Greek Epic Tale for the Stage

Sherman’s Education Manager adapts Greek Epic Tale for the Stage Dinos Aristidou, The Sherman Theatre’s Education, Youth and Participation Manager sees his new adaptation of Orpheus, a Greek epic tale of love and loss, premiered at The Sherman Theatre this September.

Dinos, who was previously writer in residence at the Chester Gateway, was commissioned to write Orpheus by the Nuffield Theatre Company who are now taking the show on a nationwide tour. He comments:

“I’ve always been interested in mythology. Orpheus is a heartbreaking story of love and loss – themes of which are universal in our society today.”

Orpheus is a piece of lyrical physical storytelling based on one of the most enduring Greek myths. Set in the underworld, Orpheus’s young wife is tragically killed and Orpheus vows to bring her back from the underworld and leaves the mortal world to risk his soul to once again embrace the woman he loves.

Dinos has worked at The Sherman Theatre for almost two years and has made a big impact on the Education department with several new initiatives including the groundbreaking ScriptSlam in which new writers face the audience vote to decide which of their pieces gets developed. Dinos comments:

“Being a writer myself, I know the opportunities I would’ve benefited from when I was younger. ScriptSlam has really taken off – we’ve had people from all walks of life and experience enter ScriptSlam, and I think they get so much out of seeing their words and ideas acted out in front of an audience. We need to help nurture and develop new writers.”

Orpheus plays at The Sherman Theatre on Thursday 14 –Friday 15 September. Tickets can be booked now from The Sherman Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
