Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) will play host to a number of musicals, opera, comedy, dance, children’s shows and music concerts in both the Donald Gordon Theatre (1,900 seats) and the Weston Studio (200 seats), providing an impressive array of performances to suit all ages (please find a comprehensive list below under the Editors Notes). Some of the performances to look out for in the Donald Gordon Theatre in October include Welsh National Opera’s performance of Chorus!, Puccini’s La boheme and Wagner’s Tristan & Isolde, as well as a three-week run of the smash hit production of Frank Loesser’s classic musical, Guys and Dolls and a one night gala performance of the world’s best loved musical, Gypsy. In the Weston Studio, performances will include 18th Century comedy The Double Inconstancy, winner of the Audience Award at the BBC World Music Awards 2003 Terrafolk, the musical Just So, Ola Onabule with his soul music, Welsh language children’s show Hel Meddyliau and the singing cellist Rebecca Carrington. The Incubator project, supported by the Colwinston Charitable Trust and WMC which aims to nurture, develop and encourage emerging talent and new work, will see Theatr Na n’Og and Antic Corporation showcase their new work in the Weston Studio at the end of October. In November, the main shows to take to the Donald Gordon stage will be Mal Pope’s hit musical with Peter Karrie and Shân Cothi Amazing Grace, the exclusive UK premiere of the Kirov Opera, Mariinsky Theatre production of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, the BBC Choir of the Year and the HSBC’s 2006 Cymry for the World Honours - biennial honours which pay tribute to Welsh artists. One night only shows during this month will include the much talked about Jones, Jones, Jones concert, “The People’s Tenor” Russell Watson, the legendary David Essex, the Young Farmers Club Gala and the RAF in Concert. Children’s show Hillbilly Goats Gruff will kick-start November in the smaller Weston Studio followed by Llandaff Musical Society’s The Mikado, Llwyfan Gogledd Cymru’s trilingual show Branwen and their Incubator Project performance Nid oes gennym hawl ar y ser, contemporary music Sing to Me, WNO’s Sweetness and Badness and, returning to WMC for the second time, Green Ginger with their unique puppet show Rust. Katherine Jenkins returns to the Donald Gordon stage in December for three consecutive nights followed by the young and talented New Zealand singer Hayley Westenra in Christmas Presence. The hilarious Mitchell & Webb will provide an evening full of entertainment before the live music extravaganza Merchants of Bollywood performs on the Welsh stage for the very first time followed by The Imperial Ice Stars’ new production of Swan Lake on Ice, the ideal Christmas show for all the family. Shows in the Weston Studio in December will include Odyssey Theatre’s A Dickens of a Christmas, followed by Theatr Mwldan & Opera Cocktail’s A Knife at the Opera and The Wedding Feast by Gwent Young People’s Theatre. Hijinx Theatre’s Estella’s Fire, an exceptional double-bill featuring two of the world's best disabled performers, David Roche & Caroline Parker and Tale from Beyond the Border’s It’s Behind You will also feature at the Weston Studio. WMC’s Director of Programming and Communications, Fiona Allan, says: “We have a very busy and varied season ahead of us which is designed to appeal to people of all ages and tastes - everything from ballet to tap, opera to musicals, comedy, drama and puppetry. “We are committed to programming the best shows at WMC. This season sees us bringing the best of the World to Wales with the exclusive season of the Kirov Ring Cycle, and presenting the best of Wales to the World with HSBC’s 2006 Cymry for the World Honours awards. As a platform for Welsh talent, our Incubator projects in the Weston Studio will help develop younger welsh artists and work, whilst established Welsh artists including Shan Cothi, Peter Karrie and Kathryn Jenkins will perform on our main stage.” Other top-class shows to look out for in January and February include the smash-hit phenomenon Tap Dogs, Scottish Ballet with their version of Cinderella and Welsh National Opera’s Madam Butterfly.
