A new drama all the way from Australia brings Aboriginal storytellers and musicians to Cardiff this October, when Yanagai! Yanagai! from the Melbourne Worker’s Theatre, visits The Sherman Theatre for one night only on Thursday 5 October at 8pm. A contemporary drama fusing the country’s colonial past with it’s multi-cultural present, Yanagai! Yanagai! (meaning war cry) was inspired by the longest running case in Australian legal history, when in 2003, the Yorta Yorta aboriginals were denied their right to land which they had inhabited for over 40,000 years. The land and rights struggle of the Yorta Yorta people continues today as a critical issue in contemporary Australia. Working closely with the people affected, Yanagai! Yanagai! was created when the Melbourne court ruled that a ‘tide of history’ had removed any connection between the Yorta Yorta people and their land. Yanagai! Yanagai! brings together a clan of storytellers, music, puppetry and touches of magic realism to celebrate the Yorta Yorta survival as an Indigenous nation and their struggles to claim land. Yanagai! Yanagai! is on at The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff on Thursday 5 October at 8pm. Tickets are £13.50 (Reductions £11) and can be booked from The Sherman Box Office on 029 2064 6900. |
