UCAN PERFORM VOTED THE CHILDREN’S CHAMPION AT NATIONAL LOTTERY AWARDS 2006 |
Welsh project, UCAN Perform, has battled off competition to shine through as one of the UK’s favourite Lottery projects - scooping the Children’s Champion trophy at this year’s National Lottery Awards. The National Lottery Awards celebrate and recognise the hard work and dedication of people who use Lottery funding to make a real difference to communities across the UK. This year’s awards attracted nearly 100,000 public votes, with the winners announced during a special National Lottery Day programme, ‘Everyone’s a winner’ on BBC1 on Saturday night. Representatives from UCAN joined 12 other regional and country finalists on the show hosted by Noel Edmonds. UCAN Perform triumphed in the Children’s Champion category, which recognises projects that directly benefit children and young people. TV Presenter Fearne Cotton handed out the Award to the delighted winners. Former Hollyoaks actor Bernard Latham and his wife Jane set up UCAN Perform with the help of £4,800 of Lottery funding from the Arts Council of Wales. The project gave visually impaired children from five local schools the opportunity to take part in a series of drama workshops, which concluded with a performance. The children learnt about drama and acting along with the technical and artistic aspects of theatre such as lighting and sound. The experience had a huge impact on the youngsters involved, boosting their confidence and self esteem and also challenged the perceptions of sighted members of the public towards people with visual impairment. Accepting the National Lottery Children’s Champion Award on behalf of UCAN Perform, Bernard Latham said: "We're absolutely delighted to have won this Award for UCAN Perform. It will really help us promote the project so that we can continue to help even more visually impaired young people in Wales and throughout the rest of the UK. Thanks to Lottery funding we have been able to raise awareness of these young people’s talent and capabilities and this Award is dedicated to them.” Since The National Lottery began in 1994, more than £900 million has been raised for Good Causes in Wales and over 26,000 grants given out across arts, sport, heritage, charities, health, education and the environment in Wales. Other winners at The National Lottery Awards were Food Chain who scooped the Inspiration Award, Stuart Liddell and the Inverary Pipe Band who claimed the title of Local Legend and Trans Penine Trail which was named the UK’s favourite Amazing Space project. The National Lottery Awards formed part of the activities for National Lottery Day which took place on Saturday 23 September. National Lottery Day celebrates and recognises the difference Lottery funding has made to people and communities across the UK. The National Lottery has raised £19 billion for Good Causes since it began in 1994. |
