25 years of creating drama, dreams, careers and creative projects…and still counting! |
This is the achievement of Cardiff based Hijinx Theatre, who celebrate their silver jubilee this year.To honour this landmark year Hijinx are hosting a masked ball at the prestigious and award winning Coal Exchange on Thursday 26th October and invites everyone to come together to celebrate this success and enjoy a glittering evening, full of theatrical and musical entertainment. Producing many shows that tour throughout Wales and England since their inception in 1981 the company have created many opportunities for Welsh actors and production staff. A significant employer in the Welsh arts sector Hijinx has helped to nurture new talent both on and behind, off and on stage. Current Hijinx hit Estella’s Fire is directed by Rosamunde Hutt. “21 years ago Hijinx Theatre gave me my first directing opportunity and it’s a pleasure to be back. I cut my directorial teeth in Wales, nourished by the fantastic work of Welsh based and visiting companies where I was allowed to experiment and find my voice”. Rosamunde has gone on to direct over eleven shows, three of which have been award winners. Gaynor Lougher, Hijinx’s Artistic Director, said ‘sitting in our office at the Wales Millennium Centre it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come; when Richard Berry and I came together 25 years ago to create a piece of theatre, we had no idea that this was the beginning of something that would develop into a company that people would grow to love and fight to save. We wanted to make theatre that spoke to our audience and that has been at the heart of everything we do - putting people at the heart of every process.’ And people are the vital ingredient of the forthcoming masked ball. Hijinx are pooling together the talents of past and present associates to distill 25 years worth of work into a packed evening of unique theatrical and musical entertainment. Lynne Sheehy from Legal and General, who are corporate friends of Hijinx and forthcoming sponsor of their community group’s, Odyssey Theatre, Christmas show is looking forward to the event. “Having seen previous Hijinx shows I know that they are capable of putting on a great night out so I can’t wait to see what they have prepared for the evening. It’s a remarkable achievement to still be flying high after 25 years and the masked ball is a great opportunity for people to experience this slice of Welsh theatre, relax and be wined and dined in theatrical style.” For more information and to book tickets please contact Emma Robinson, Hijinx’s Development Officer on 029 20 635 625 or email emma.robinson@hijinx.org.uk |
