DARK SECRETS ARE REVEALED IN TENNESSEE WILLIAMS’ UNCENSORED CLASSIC |
Secrets and lies abound in the Pollitt household as Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize winning play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof comes to the New Theatre for a week long run. Opening on Tuesday 10 October this sumptuous, uncensored production boasts a superb cast including acclaimed actor William Gaunt as Big Daddy.Set in the humid, turbulent atmosphere of the American Deep South, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a claustrophobic examination of greed, deception and sexuality. Affluent Southerner, Big Daddy and his dysfunctional family have gathered to celebrate his 65th birthday. The celebrations are cloaked in deception however as the family try to hide Big Daddy’s ailing health from him, whilst each covertly scheming to get their hands on the family fortune. Youngest son Brick has turned to drink after the death of his best friend, and though his marriage has collapsed, he and his wife Maggie keep up the pretence of wedded bliss to stay in the running for Big Daddy’s inheritance. Whilst his elder brother Gooper uses Brick’s addiction as a weapon to get him disinherited. Within the space of a couple of hours this family’s hidden agendas and deceptions are revealed to each other and to themselves forcing everyone to confront some painful truths… This steamy and explosive play, one of Williams’ finest, courted major controversy when it was first produced in the 1950s due to its underlying theme of homosexuality. The multi-Oscar nominated film adaptation starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor was forced to radically alter the last section of the story to eliminate any references to same-sex desires. With the era of censorship long gone this striking stage production returns to Williams’ own script, with his acidly witty take on the complexities of human relationships and reinstating his original and emotionally powerful ending. A superb cast includes Ben Hull (Hollyoaks) as the fading ‘Golden Boy’ Brick, Lesley Harcourt (Taggart) as battler Maggie ‘the Cat’, Rosemary Leech (last seen at the New in The Shellseekers) as the put upon Big Mama and William Gaunt (Next of Kin) as the dictatorial Big Daddy. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 October. Tickets are on sale now with prices ranging from £7 to £24.
