A new musical about Rhondda boxer Tommy Farr will be showcased in Cardiff next week as part of the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre.Singer-songwriter Mal Pope has written Contender, a rags-to-riches story about boxer Tommy Farr, and his infamous World Title fight against the legendary Joe Louis at the Yankee Stadium in 1937. A wealthy man when he retired from his initial boxing career, Tommy Farr returned to the ring when facing bankruptcy at the age of 37. In a fight which captivated Wales, Farr fought bravely and held on for 15 rounds, with Louis unable to bring Farr down. Joe Louis won eventually on points. Contender is a new musical by Mal Pope which will premiere in full at The Sherman Theatre next Summer. In this special concert, Mal will showcase Contender as well as perform some songs from last year's incredible success Amazing Grace. Mal will perform along with students from the Academy of Musical Theatre Wales and Gorseinon College. Contender is on at The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff on Monday 23 October at 8pm. Tickets can be booked now from The Sherman Box Office on 029 2064 6900. |
