IT’S A SHOCKER OF AN OPERA! SEXY, SURREAL AND SLIGHTLY NAUGHTY! |
Bold, bizarre and brand new, House of the Gods, a comedic opera for adult audiences, makes its macabre way to the New Theatre for one night of naughtiness on Sunday 12 November.A Gothic opera in which comedy and horror walk hand in hand, House of the Gods is set in a back-street pub in the First World War. Its music is by turns dark and satirical, magical, lyrical and bittersweet. Echoes of Victorian music hall and cabaret mingle with the seductive sounds of patriotic propaganda as Jack O’Connor, a cynical and disillusioned soldier back from the Front, finds himself living through what seems like a macabre and surreal opium dream. Vampish and absurd House of the Gods is presented by the fore-runners of contemporary opera, Music Theatre Wales, and is penned by the award winning partnership of composer Lynne Plowman and librettist Martin Riley. Plowman won the inaugural British Composer Award for Best Stage Work in 2003 for her children’s opera Gwyneth and the Green Knight. In House of the Gods she teams up again with librettist Martin Riley, though with themes that explore sex, sacrifice, innocence and empire, plus a small dose of opium, this show is targeted for a slightly older audience! Plowman continues to be based in South Wales and in addition to her composition work, she is a celebrated flautist and holds the post of Composition Tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. Containing larger-than-life characters inspired by Irish mythology, House of the Gods is a wacky, crazy, fast-paced production, sung in English, featuring one or two slightly blue phrases you wouldn’t expect to hear in an opera! House of the Gods is at the New Theatre, Cardiff for one night only on Sunday 12 November. Ticket prices range from £7 to £15.
