“My (our) work is in performance art. … In terms of the materials used, it starts with the artist’s own body as the basic source. … My own interest is in sculptural formalism… and additionally a humanistic and autobiographical theme. My work has always been an expression of dualities, formal, physical and emotional. It is because of this, I believe, that I have been able to work with another person: the concretizing of the theme of self and other.”                                    [Shirley Cameron, 1979]

“In my performance I use constructed objects, altered or coloured clothing; and occasional language for exposition or narrative: I try to re-establish the importance of our relationship as individuals with others… I try to project through my body’s actions our physical domination of one another, our postures of servitude, our ludicrousness, or physical presence in the world.”                                                                                     [Roland Miller, 1979]

Shirley Cameron, a trained sculptor, and Roland Miller, who had been a core member of the influential People Show, first worked together in 1970 in the context of the famous Barry Summer School, one of the finest examples of experimental art education in Britain. Throughout the seventies they created a substantial body of work together from their base in Swansea, making simple ritual event-pieces, working with colour, perspective and found objects in a visually striking manner. Whilst continuing to create solo work and collaborate with a number of other performance artists, Cameron and Miller are best known for their joint practice as a couple, often exploring their mutual roles in this partnership, and later frequently involving their two daughters in the work.
