An experienced Welsh television executive will share his know-how with the world of the theatre from now on.Sion Hughes, who is originally from Penmynydd in Anglesey, has been appointed General Manager of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru – the Welsh National Theatre Company. “I’m looking forward immensely to the challenges I’ll face in my new working environment,” said the 43-year-old father of three. “I will be managing and developing the business and ensuring we have a good working relationship with all our partners,” he added. For seven years before taking up his new post Sion Hughes served as the Chief Executive of the television training provider, CYFLE. Prior to that he worked for the former HTV Wales; S4C; and the Welsh independent television producers’ body, TAC. “As in television the success of a theatre company is based on a strong business strategy combined with flair, imagination and artistic talent,” added Sion Hughes. “One is interdependent on the other and a necessity in order to make Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru a success with its stakeholders especially its audiences,” he said. To that end Sion Hughes is already planning a strategy that takes some productions outside Wales. “Our priorities will always lie here in Wales but I believe there is an audience for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru performances especially in London,” said Sion Hughes . “It would also give our actors, playwrights and directors a further opportunity to display their talents,” he added. But one of Sion Hughes’ first duties is to oversee Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s move to its permanent home and rehearsal facility in Carmarthen’s Trinity College’s new Cultural Enterprise and Innovation Centre. “The £2.5m building is well under way and we look forward to its completion,” said Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru Chairman, Lyn T. Jones. “We’re therefore extremely glad to appoint Sion at this exiting time in our development as a national theatre company,” he added. |
