Welsh science show shortlisted for theatre award at Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Welsh science show shortlisted for theatre award at Edinburgh Fringe Festival Award-winning Welsh company ‘science made simple’ has been shortlisted for a prestigious theatre award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

‘visualise – the beauty of science’ is in the running for the Total Theatre Award for experimentation, after beating off stiff competition from over 400 competing productions. The innovative show uses live science experiments, physical theatre, music and film to illustrate – without words - the beautiful and curious world of science.

Wendy Sadler, founder of ‘science made simple’ said: “We’re very excited to be shortlisted for this award as it is our first time at the Edinburgh fringe. We believe it is really important to break down the boundaries between art and science and to use shows like this to reach new audiences with science.”

‘visualise’ was selected by The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama as part of their Welsh showcase. After it completes the run in Edinburgh, the team will be exporting the experience with a tour of nine countries in South East Europe in partnership with the British Council. It is hoped that the production can then come back to tour Wales and the rest of the UK.

Science made simple performers Debbie Syrop and Gaz Smith have a huge range of skills between them. As Engineering and Biochemistry graduates respectively, they have a passion for science but also a huge talent for performing. Debbie said: “We have been thrilled by the positive reaction of the audiences.”

Gaz added: “From the very young children to the adult theatre experts – everyone seems to find plenty to enjoy in the show. With no language it works at so many different levels.”

The company was able to appear at the festival thanks to sponsorship from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) who were keen to support the presence of science at one of the World’s biggest arts events.
