hampsteadtheatre's Second New Writing Festival! For one week only, anarchy rules at hampsteadtheatre As with the first, the theatre's Second New Writing Festival is something of a cross-breeding experiment. Like a bad gag from a joke book, we're been asking ourselves "What do you get if you cross..." but instead of crossing a sheep with a kangaroo and getting a woolly jumper, or a centipede with a parrot and getting a walkie-talkie, we've been cross-breeding writers, artists and theatre companies. The results are rather extraordinary - seventeen writers, thirteen plays, a wealth of first-rate actors, a host of talent and six fun-packed evenings. This is hampsteadtheatre at its most vibrant. "Playtime" by Gary Owen and Gabriel Bisset-Smith directed by Tamara Harvey Friday 14th September, 7.30pm, £6. Cast: Kirsty Bushell, Fiona Button, Billy Carter, Simon Darwen, Jonny Phillips, Narinder Samra, Richard Shanks, Ellen Thomas, Philip Voss, David Webber This darkly comic new play is set after the stock markets collapse and Russian pipes stop pumping oil, after climate change has wreaked havoc and floods have washed away civilization as we know it. It's a brutal and vividly-realised world in which people set up their own governments, priests are rejected from communities for failing to offer useful skills and leaders must negotiate with their own soldiers for their lives. Two extremely distinctive voices come together as gifted playwright Gary Owen (The Shadow Of A Boy, National Theatre) pairs up with emerging talent Gabriel Bisset-Smith in a funny and unsettling tour de force not to be missed. |
