Welsh Independent Dance: dance bytes ‘Presentations’

Welsh Independent Dance: dance bytes ‘Presentations’ Six talented choreographers from Wales will be presenting their work at Chapter on 26 and 27 September as part of Welsh Independent Dance’s annual choreographic development programme, dance bytes.

dance bytes began in April 1998 to support and facilitate the creation of new choreographic work from Wales based choreographers and has helped launch a number of choreographic careers including Jem Treays, Tanja Råman, Mr & Mrs Clark, Sandra Harnisch-Lacey and Eddie Ladd.

Although the primary aim of the dance bytes programme is to support emerging choreographers, the process is also very much geared towards audience engagement. It is a fascinating and rare insight to see the work of various artists develop from initial choreographic ideas to full production. The dance bytes initiative allows the artists and the audience to look closely at the creative process - what works, what doesn’t work and why? dance bytes encourages a public interest in the artist’s work and artist interest in the public’s views – this exchange is extremely important to the development of the work.

The first stage of the 2007/2008 programme will take place in Chapter’s Stiwdio on 26 and 27 September at 7pm. Six pieces will be performed over the two nights with Jo Young, Bridie Doyle and Matthew Howells presenting their work on the Wednesday and Sally Marie, Kylie Ann Smith/ Ricky White and Caroline Sabin presenting on the Thursday. Each choreographer will present their initial idea for development both practically and verbally in an informal setting. Four pieces will consequently be selected by the dance bytes panel to progress onto the second stage, ‘Work in Progress’ which will be performed in Chapter’s theatre on 29 and 30 November 2007.
Two of the four choreographers will then be selected by the panel to progress onto the third and final stage, ‘New Work’ to develop their work for small-scale touring. The final two pieces will be performed at Chapter on 14 and 15 March 2008 before embarking on a three week tour across Wales.

Tickets for dance bytes ‘Presentations’ are FREE but must be reserved at Chapter box office on 029 20304400. Tickets are going fast so book as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.
