Wednesday 12 March 2008Cwmni’r Frân Wen will partake in a day of activities hosted by the Croeso Team which aims to celebrate the history, lives and hopes of Gypsies and Travellers in Wales. In the morning: In the Neuadd of the Senedd, in Cardiff, there will be two events. At 10am there will be an opportunity to hear the voices of Gypsies and Travellers in Wales. At 11.10am the four political parties in Wales will spell out how they are working to counter prejudice in the forthcoming local elections. In the afternoon and evening: In the Urdd Hall, part of the facilities of Urdd Gobaith Cymru at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cwmni’r Frân Wen will perform ‘Johnny Delaney’, a drama based on the tragic story of the death of a teenage Irish Traveller. Fifteen year old Johnny Delaney was killed in 2003 on the outskirts of Ellesmere Port, when a gang of youths reacted towards his Irish accent and attacked him. Two young men from this gang were sentenced to four and a half years for his manslaughter rather than murder, with no accusation made against them that the attack was racially aggravated. The production originally toured as a theatre in education project during October and November 2007, targeting 14-15 year olds at secondary schools in Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy. The company collaborated with the Croeso Project during the tour to prepare school resources which aimed to challenge attitudes towards Gypsies and Travellers, encouraging discussions in schools to create more understanding and tolerance. Cwmni’r Frân Wen is proud to be able to collaborate once again with the Croeso Project on this important day. The first performance will start at 1.30pm and the second at 6.30pm. Both performances will be in English. There will be an opportunity for discussion about the issues raised after each performance. There is no charge for attendance at any of the events but space is limited so it is important for the Croeso Team to know of all interest in advance. The experienced cast of the production includes: Owen Arwyn, Robin Ceiriog, Carys Gwilym and Carwyn Jones.
