Dance Bytes On Tour 2008

Dance Bytes On Tour 2008 Welsh Independent Dance (WID), the national organisation for professional dancers and choreographers, is presenting an exciting double bill from emerging, Wales based choreographers Kylie Ann Smith, Ricky White and Matthew Howells. The performance will feature two newly commissioned pieces selected through WID’s unique choreographic development scheme, Dance Bytes. The successful programme originally began in 1998 to support and facilitate the creation of new work from Wales and has helped to build a number of careers including Jem Treays, Tanja Råman, Mr & Mrs Clark, Sandra Harnisch-Lacey and Eddie Ladd. The popularity of the programme has steadily grown over the years, with each performance stage of the 07/08 cycle at Chapter Arts Centre having sold out.

There are three creative stages to the dance bytes scheme, which develop the work from initial choreographic ideas to the fully developed, accomplished pieces presented on tour.

Kylie and Ricky’s unique work, Animangamon, is inspired by Manga, Anime and computer games, examining the idea of reality versus virtual reality. They cleverly combine dance, martial arts, props and projected animation to parody classic computer games in an effective and engaging way.

In contrast, Matthew’s sophisticated and lyrical trio, Cube with Magic Ribbons, focuses very much on pure dance movement. LABAN trained Matthew explores the notion of ‘space’ and how the relationship with the audience can alter depending on how the dancers utilise the performance area. This is compounded through the innovative use of music and silence against a mix of dynamic trio work and intimate solos/duets.

Come and see some of the best experimental dance that Wales has to offer in this highly creative and engaging programme presented by up and coming choreographers/dancers - ideal for first time dance audiences and regular dance performance attenders.
