The world’s greatest thriller

The world’s greatest thriller One of the greatest ever stage thrillers, Sleuth ran for a total of 12 years in London and New York, winning the Tony for Best Play and inspiring two film versions, both starring Michael Caine. It now makes a much anticipated return in this extraordinary revival starring Simon MacCorkindale and Michael Praed which visits the New Theatre from Monday 2 June.

This dark psychological ‘thriller about thrillers’ is a fascinating study of human conflict, jealousy and manipulation. Proving to be far more than a ‘whodunit’, Sleuth promises to baffle even the most prolific sleuth.

A young man arrives at the impressive home of a famous writer, only to be drawn into a tangled web of intrigue and gamesmanship, where nothing is quite what it seems. The play is set in the Wiltshire manor house of Andrew Wyke, an immensely successful mystery writer. His home reflects his obsession with the inventions and deceptions of fiction and his fascination with games and game playing. He lures his wife’s lover, Milo Tindle, to the house and convinces him to stage a robbery of her jewellery, a proposal which sets off a chain of events that leaves the audience trying to decipher where Wyke’s imagination ends and reality begins.

The audacious revival of Anthony Shaffer’s masterpiece brings together Simon MacCorkindale and Michael Praed. Simon is best known for his role as Harry Harper in the BBC’s Casualty, and for the hit US TV series Falcon Crest and Manimal. Michael is the veteran of TV classics Robin of Sherwood and Dynasty.

Written in 1970, Shaffer was partially inspired by one of his friends, composer Stephen Sondheim, whose intense interest in game-playing is mirrored by the character of Wyke. In 1972 Shaffer adapted Sleuth for the critically acclaimed and hugely successful film version starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. In 2007 Caine was to star in the new adaptation by Harold Pinter, this time in the role of Andrew Wyke and joined by Jude Law in the role of Milo Tindle.

Sleuth is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Monday 2 – Saturday 7 June with evening performances at 7.30pm and Thursday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets range from £7 - £26 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
