![]() “And what do you do for a living, Mrs. Levi?" asks Ambrose Kemper in the first scene of this hit musical comedy. "Some people paint, some sew... I meddle," replies Dolly. And we are off on a whirlwind race around New York at the turn of the twentieth century as we follow the adventures of America's most beloved matchmaker! Dolly has been hired to arrange a marriage for the widowed half-millionaire Horace Vandergelder. Dolly, however, has other plans. She herself has recently become a widow and come to the conclusion that Horace and his fortune will make her the perfect mate. So when she arrives in Yonkers, she immediately begins to plant seeds of doubt in Vandergelder's mind about Irene Molloy, the pretty young widow she originally picked out for him. Hello, Dolly! is full of memorable Jerry Herman songs including Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Ribbons Down My Back, Before the Parade Passes By, Hello, Dolly!, It Only Takes a Moment and So Long, Dearie. As well as this show, Jerry Herman’s successes include Mame and La Cage Aux Folles. The star-studded cast is led by Anita Dobson as Dolly Levi. Best known for her role as Angie Watts in EastEnders and her numerous stage and TV roles, Anita is also an established recording artist having earned a silver disc for her hit record Anyone Can Fall in Love. Joining her are Darren Day (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Summer Holiday, Grease) who plays the loveable Cornelius Hackl, David McAlister (Hollyoaks, The Bill, Annie) who plays the ‘unmarried half-a-millionaire’ Horace Vandergelder and Louise English (The Benny Hill Show, Annie, Oliver!) as the sophisticated hat shop owner Mrs Irene Molloy. Hello, Dolly! stormed the Broadway stage for 2844 performances and played nearly three years in the West End. The show received not only 10 Tony Awards but a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for a Musical and two Outer Critics Circle Awards. In 1969 the musical was made into a film starring Barbara Streisand and was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Now it’s back where it belongs – on stage with a company of over forty and a live orchestra.
