Assembly members want an explanation on the drama strategy The Assembly Committee responsible for the arts has called on the Arts Council of Wales for an explanation of its controversial drama strategy. In Wednesday's meeting of the Post-16 Education Committee, members voted to focus their attention on the much- criticised drama strategy of the council. The council has been criticised for its proposed funding of various theatre groups, some of which it is feared could face closure as a result. Tom Middlehurst argued there was a misunderstanding The vote went against the wishes of the cabinet secretary responsible for arts and culture, Tom Middlehurst. The Arts Council was already scheduled to give evidence on 19 January, as part of the assembly's arts and culture policy review. Conservative Jonathan Morgan supported Mr Middlehurst's argument that combining the drama strategy with a general discussion of the arts would "muddy the waters." Mr Middlehurst warned that opinions on this issue were based on a lot of misunderstandings, and that an appeal process was currently underway. Despite these warnings, the committee voted to investigate both issues, subject to legal advice on the appeals process . |
