![]() Deep Cut, produced by Sherman Cymru, has been awarded a Fringe First award, which commends new work at the Festival, and a Herald Angel award for production excellence. Deep Cut has also sold out all remaining performances at the Traverse Theatre and has received great critical acclaim. Director of Sherman Cymru, Chris Ricketts, comments: “The response to Deep Cut has been exceptional. It's a strong, potent piece of theatre that addresses important areas of public life through a very human story. Producing it has been a real honour for all of us involved.” Deep Cut, written by Philip Ralph, uses original source material and powerful first hand testimonies of those closest to Private Cheryl James, one of four young soldiers who died from gunshot wounds in unexplained circumstances between 1995 and 2002. Although The Blake Review, an independent review of the deaths, concluded that Cheryl probably committed suicide, her family continue to fight for a full public inquiry to gain answers from the people responsible for their daughter’s care. Writer Philip Ralph comments: “We’re here because four young people died and the government had no interest in finding out why. We represent those four people and their families and are here to tell their story. Hopefully with the help of these awards, and the support of the press, we can tell that story to many more people.” Deep Cut is on at the Traverse Theatre, as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, until 24 August before touring to Clwyd Theatr Cymru on 9 – 13 September, and then returning to Sherman, Cardiff on 16 – 27 September. |
