An event designed to celebrate local life, people and culture is set to take place in Bridgend town centre this Christmas. As part of New Light 2008, huge images of local people and places from around the county borough will be digitally projected onto the recently restored architecture of the Graham Paul building in Dunraven Place. Starting at 4.30pm on Wednesday 17 December, the event will begin with a children’s lantern parade through the streets of the town. Led by the Coytrahen Mari Lwyd group, the parade will stop at local shops and present a modern update of the famous Mari Lwyd custom of ‘rapping’ on doors. Live music from the likes of Bridgend Male Voice Choir, singer-songwriter Phil James and local bands All For The Fall and Dog Day Life will entertain the crowds alongside drama performed by Bridgend Youth Theatre and written by Voices Of Wales playwright Gary Owen. New Light 2008 will feature plenty of traditional carol singing, mulled wine and mince pies and will coincide with Bridgend town centre’s annual Christmas Market. Arts Development Officer Andre van Wyk said: “As well as being a community outdoor festive event that everyone can enjoy, we want local people of all ages to take part by sending their original photographs and festive greetings via mobile phone and email to our special ‘Textmas’ competition. “Your submission might be a family photograph or a Christmas or New Year’s greeting that you would be happy to share with the people of the county borough. “A selection of the photographs and images will be digitally projected up onto the Graham Paul building in Dunraven Place and displayed in shop windows around town until New Year’s Eve. “Anyone who enters the ‘Textmas’ competition will have a chance of winning fantastic prizes donated by local businesses, including bed and breakfast breaks, gift vouchers for clothing, music and fancy dress stores and free canvas prints of your favourite photograph. “The Textmas entries will be placed inside a time capsule alongside other specially created community materials and hidden inside an archway in the Graham Paul building for future generations to discover.” To submit materials for New Light 2008, either text 07725 202020 with the key word ‘newlight’ or email thepeople@bridgendnewlight.com You can find out more by visiting www.newlightbridgend.com or calling 01656 642688.
