ACW statement re: theatre for young people in Wales

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) is committed to establishing a stronger and more sustainable foundation for the future for theatre for young people throughout Wales. During last year it became necessary for ACW to propose changes to the funding of theatre for young people within its overall review of drama in Wales. This was due to the impact of local government reorganisation, local management of schools and constraints on local authority spending on the arts which have together meant reduced resources available to pay for productions for young people.

Last year, ACW published its drama strategy which proposed concentrating funding on five theatre for young people companies instead of the current eight.

ACW has proactively sought the views of all interested parties and following recent discussions with the Welsh Local Government Association ACW has decided to maintain the previous eight company network for a further year. This means funding will be provided for the eight companies which are currently delivering theatre for young people throughout Wales.

Sybil Crouch, ACW Chairman said, "The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) presented ACW with very reasonable responses to our proposals. ACW and WLGA are mutually committed to providing a national provision of theatre to young people in Wales. ACW looks forward to holding further detailed discussions with WLGA on arrangements for implementation of a suitable partnership approach to deliver our joint aim of providing the best possible service throughout Wales."

Cllr. Jeff Jones, the WLGA's spokesperson for Education said, "The WLGA is keen to work towards a sustainable way forward in partnership with ACW and I am pleased that we will be working together with ACW to secure a high quality national provision of theatre for young people in Wales."
