![]() Llandaff Musical Society have presented an annual musical at Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre for over thirty years and now present the musical made famous by Doris Day in the 1954 film version. Set in Deadwood City, 1876, Calamity Jane tells the story of Calamity Jane, her saloon and her romance with Wild Bill Hickock. After a mix-up in the talent pool at Deadwood's saloon-theater, Calamity goes to Chicago to import to Deadwood the glamorous actress, Adelaid Adams, but returns by mistake with her maid, Katie Brown instead. Back in Deadwood, Katie's inability to perform is overcome as she wins the heart of the young Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, and when Calamity sheds her tomboy persona at a ball at the local Fort and becomes a true woman, she realizes that she loves Wild Bill Hickok. Calamity Jane was adapted for the stage from the film musical of the same name with Doris Day in the title role and Howard Keel as Wild Bill Hickok. This stage version of the show was premiered at the Municipal Theatre in St. Louis in 1961. Famous songs from the show include The Deadwood Stage, Windy City, Black Hills of Dakota and Secret Love, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Score. Calamity Jane is on at Sherman from 21 – 24 January. Tickets are £11 and £9 (New VAT rate will be applied when booking) and are available from Sherman’s Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online at www.shermancymru.co.uk |
