Marc Rees returns to Wales following successful Berlin premiere |
3 men runningDirection/Choreography: Jutta Hell Performers/Choreography: Dieter Baumann (Germany), Marc Rees (Wales) and Guillermo Weickert-Molina (Spain) Following a triumphant final performance of Gloria Days in Caernarfon this month, leading Welsh contemporary artiste Marc Rees returns to the stage with a brand new production. In 3 men running, three dancers aged between thirty and fifty from three different cultures are joined together by a strong, common experience: the recent death of their fathers. The production, opening at Taliesin in Swansea on January 22nd following its world premiere in Berlin, delves into the before and after, as well as the mundane and extraordinary, while searching for resonances, effects and consequences. On Tuesday 27th January, the company visits Sherman Cymru for the only performance in Cardiff. Real objects from their fathers' belongings individualize their experiences, give each story meaning and protect feelings like an anchor in the currents of time. Given their fathers' common love of gardening, the three dancers have created a space within space using simple elements of artificial turf. Video fragments, evidence both real and imagined of a life lived, seem to document similarities between fathers and sons... or is it distance and difference? Marc notes: “After Gloria Days, it's good to return to the familiarity of my square mile: the intimate landscape and decor of my upringing and it's amazing how much material can be continuously drawn from that very simple notion, it is indeed an inexhaustible source of inspiration. It’s especially wonderful this time to share it with two other men, to compare and contrast our backgrounds and our own very personal ways of dealing with such a difficult subject as the loss of one’s father but how better to deal with it than through creativity, channelling all these feelings and emotions into a contemporary dance piece”. Run through with strength and sensitivity, 3 men running is played out to atmospheric, haunting and at times sentimental music by contemporary artistes including Imogen Heap and Welsh electro-acoustic duo, Nest. These three archeologists of the past and the future delve into a subject that, whilst often avoided, does affect us all, in this inspiring and affirming dance performance. 3 men running is at Taliesin Arts Centre on Thursday 22nd January at 7.30pm and Sherman Cymru on Tuesday 27th January at 8pm. Tickets for Swansea are available now on 01792 60 20 60 and for Cardiff on 029 2064 6900 and online from www.shermancymru.co.uk . |
