Show directed by Oscar nominated Stephen Daldry comes to the New Theatre |
![]() This will be Daldry’s third nomination for Best Director; he was previously nominated for his work on the films Billy Elliot and The Hours. Despite not winning these awards it is predicted that the 2009 Academy Awards will tell a different story. The Reader is already demonstrating its success as leading lady Kate Winslet has been sweeping the award ceremonies collecting trophies for her portrayal as Hanna, a woman accused of Nazi war crimes. In 1992 Stephen successfully revived the National Theatre’s production of JB Priestley’s classic thriller An Inspector Calls which later transferred to Broadway. To date, the production has won 19 major awards including the 1993 Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Director of a play, the 1994 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play and the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Director of a Play. The epic staging, raw emotion and sweeping score are just some of the elements that made An Inspector Calls a smash hit all over the world. The play has won more awards than any other play in history and will be on stage in Cardiff at the New Theatre from Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 May. The play is centred on the wealthy Birling family whose intimate dinner party is interrupted by the arrival of the mysterious Inspector Goole. His investigation into the death of a young woman shatters their lives and challenges the audience to examine their own moral consciences. Previous visits of this production to Cardiff have completely sold out, with schools especially eager to see the live performance of a much studied text. Anyone wishing to get hold of the remaining tickets for this production is advised to book early to avoid disappointment An Inspector Calls is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 May with Evening performances at 7.30pm and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm.
