Thoroughly Modern Millie Thoroughly Modern Millie
At Sherman, 13-21 Feb 2009

It’s the roaring Twenties and small-town girl Millie Dillmount arrives in Manhattan with high hopes and a higher hemline, hoping to find the Modern Life she’s been reading about back in Kansas. But her plans to marry a wealthy man are thwarted when she falls for penniless Jimmy Smith and becomes embroiled in exposing the secret world of a white slavery ring.

‘1922 – New York. The world is in flux. Women have the vote. Dance halls are launching the first pop stars. Girls are rejecting their destinies as dutiful wives and mothers in favour of flattening their breasts and bobbing their hair; New York has the greatest concentration of millionaires of anywhere on the planet, the economy is booming, millions are consuming tons of consumer goods on cheap credit. New York is hugely optimistic about the future but some worry that this can’t last for ever. Everything today is thoroughly modern, what could possibly go wrong?’ Phillip Breen, Director

Based on the hugely popular 1967 film starring Julie Andrews, this all-new musical with an original score, won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, when it opened on Broadway in 2002

Traditionally one of the highlights of the College year, the musical has also proved to be a launch-pad for students’ careers:

· Quadrophenia in 2007 starred Kimberley Nixon who has since featured in BBC’s Cranford, Easy Virtue and the upcoming Cherry Bomb. She recently made her West End debut as Griet in The Girl with the Pearl Earring

· Last year’s musical, West Side Story featured Aneurin Barnard as Tony. He made his West End debut as one of the leads in the Tony award-winning new musical Spring Awakening that opened in January

The Take Your Seat Campaign, fronted by Rob Brydon will be launched on the opening night.
