The latest theatre, dance and performance news

The irrepressable Mappa Mundi are back! The Reigning Monarchs of accessible theatre invite you to a sumptious society romp with Oliver Goldsmiths classic 18th Century farce She Stoops to Conquer, as part of a 20 date tour of Wales during April and May 2009. With an outrageous mix of secret elopements and nocturnal confusions, this satirical poke at polite society paints a ribald and hilarious portrait of life and love in the town and country with mistaken identities, acts of blatant greed, selfishness and plain stupidity, making it perfect fodder for Mappa Mundi’s sardonic style. Guest Directed by Peter Doran of The Torch Theatre, Milford Haven, audiences can expect larger than life characters, big laughs and even bigger hairpieces…

This time round the cast includes comic genius Kieran Self - Roger the dentist from BBC’s My Family, policeman in High Hopes and writer of Theatr na n’Og’s amazing production Cyrano. Fans of Welsh Rugby Scrum IV will recognize Richard Nichols, as well as some familiar Mappa Mundi faces.

You can even get a taste of the behind the scenes action by visiting to see an hilarious trailer specially made to accompany the tour. Alternatively, visit Mappa Mundi’s website to see what all the fuss is about!

Mappa Mundi are renowned for their sumptuous and inventive sets, clever lighting and gorgeous colourful costumes, and for this particular production they have courted the directing skills of Peter Doran, Artistic Director of Torch Theatre, Milford Haven, who says; ‘When asked what I’d like to direct, She Stoops to Conquer was my first choice, not only is it a brilliant comedy, it’s also perfectly suited to Mappa Mundi. Although written in the 18th century the characters seen totally real and in many ways very modern; its themes of snobbery, class and society are as relevant today as they’ve ever been and young people having to cope with the rigors of everyday life whilst trying to find both themselves and a partner is both fascinating and enormously resonant.’

Peter is now in his 11th year as Artistic Director of The Torch Theatre, and has re-launched the new Torch in March of 2008 and set the tone for the year to come. Peter was made Honorary Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2006. He has himself has enjoyed acclaim on both side of the camera and curtain – even once appearing as Dirty Den’s cell mate in Eastenders! He says the production will stay faithful to the original text but as usual you can expect that the Mappa Mundi treatment will give you a whole new perspective on a classic play.

Mappa Mundi have achieved cult status amongst audiences and their performances frequently sell out. Please note: She Stoops to Conquer will be performed in English, and is suitable for audiences over the age of 12. The show will contain no bad language or nudity but may contain innuendo of adult nature.
