A prolific young playwright from London could very well enthuse burgeoning Welsh dramatists to put pen to paper. That at least is the hope of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru (Wales’ national Welsh-language touring theatre company) in inviting the film, television, radio and stage playwright, David Eldridge, to Wales next week.

“David Eldridge’s theatre credits include ‘Under the Blue Sky’, ‘Thanks Mum’ and ‘A Week With Tony’ and his television accomplishments include ‘Killers’ and ‘Our Hidden Lives,” said Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru Artistic Director, Cefin Roberts.

“He’s also worked extensively as an encourager of playwriting, especially to new and first-time dramatists,” he added.

David Eldridge will address the fine art of penning successful plays in the Norwegian Church Arts Centre in Cardiff Bay on Wednesday evening, April 8, 2009, at 7.30pm. He will also be open to questions from the floor.

“This will be a unique master-class and a must for anyone with ambitions set on seeing their work performed on stage,” added Cefin Roberts.
“It will also endorse Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s artistic policy of supporting young writers and promoting new and exciting material,” he said.

David Eldridge’s visit to Wales in sponsored by the Cardiff-based independent television production company, Rondo, in memory of leading Welsh playwright, WS Jones or Wil Sam, who died in November 2007.

“Wil Sam himself would be over the moon with the concept of giving young Welsh dramatists this sort of opportunity,” said Cefin Roberts.
“It’s exceptionally fitting that David Eldridge’s visit is in memory of someone who spent most of his life supporting all aspect of Welsh theatre,” he added

In addition to his work as a writer David Eldridge is Honorary Fellow in Drama at the University of Exeter. In July 2007 the University honoured his work as a playwright by making him a Doctor of Letters.
