A new play by award-winning Welsh playwright Gary Owen based on his own life experiences opens at Sherman, Cardiff from 1 – 9 May.
Amgen : Broken, produced by Sherman Cymru and directed by Elen Bowman, is set in Cardiff and follows one man's decisions and choices and how they affect the rest of his life. The play is in both Welsh and English and is partly based on Gary’s own experiences.
Gary/Gareth is an agoraphobic who only goes out to collect his dole money and gets worked up about litter on the street and the 'rat-children' in society. Gareth decides to go back to Welsh lessons and meet new people whereas Gary chooses another path which takes his life in a totally different direction. Writer Gary Owen comments:
“Most of the play is in English, some of it is in Welsh but if you don't speak Welsh don't worry - that's kind of the point! A hybrid of drama, storytelling and stand-up Amgen : Broken uses Welsh and English to portray two sides of one unemployed man's struggle to save civilisation from the 'rat-children'."
Amgen : Broken stars Steven Meo, star of BBC Three’s hit show Grown Ups, and Simon Watts, star of Welsh language drama series Y Pris. Both actors have just finished Clwyd Theatr Cymru’s tour of Great Expectations together, in which Steven played the lead role of Pip.
Gary Owen is an award-winning writer whose plays have been produced all over the world. His previous productions include Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco, The Shadow of a Boy and Ghost City. Gary is currently Writer in Residence at Sherman, and is also writing Sherman’s 2009 mainstage Christmas production A Christmas Carol.
Amgen : Broken continues Sherman Cymru’s commitment to Welsh and Wales-based writers, and follows on from the success of Deep Cut, which transferred to London’s Tricycle Theatre in March this year and will embark on a national tour later this year.
Amgen : Broken is on at Sherman from 1 – 9 May 8pm (No performances Sunday 3 – Monday 4 May). Tickets are £12, reductions £10, Under 19s £8 and can be booked from Sherman’s Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online at www.shermancymru.co.uk (no booking fee). Amgen : Broken will also tour to Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold from 12 – 16 May.
