Being pregnant and knowing that a new life is growing inside you is a miracle in anyone’s book. But Luká_ Timulak was so inspired by the baby he and wife Carolina were expecting that he choreographed an entire dance work based around the experience. From conception to birth, Offspring, an emotionally beautiful contemporary dance piece, uses dance moves, special lighting and sound effects to depict the wonderment of a baby’s journey from the womb into the world. It’s amazing that Timulak – a former NDT2 dancer, who now dances with sister company Nederlands Dans Theater – even made the world premiere of his work. Fittingly, the couple’s daughter Zoe was born just hours before the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (NDT2) took to the stage at The Hague in the Netherlands for its first performance this February. Now this celebratory work is to get its Welsh premiere as NDT2 come to Wales Millennium Centre this summer as part of the company’s 10th UK tour. The company will also present another premiere, Gods and Dogs choreographed by Ji_í Kylián. Set to the music of Beethoven’s String Quartet Opus 18, it explores the border between normality and sanity. The programme is completed with Ohad Naharin’s Minus 16, an exhilarating, uplifting and joyful piece set to a musical compilation of chacha, mambo and traditional Israeli music. A fun and humorous piece, it is a company favourite and has always received a tremendous reception from British audiences. Founded in 1978, NDT2 is the second, younger company of Nederlands Dans Theater and over the past 30 years has established a reputation for the astounding technique and boundless energy of its young dancers. The company consists of 16 dancers aged between 17 and 23 years who come from all over the world. As well as working together, the young dancers all live closely together in NDT's specially-built headquarters in The Hague, along with members of the main NDT company, and dancers from NDT3, who are all aged 40 or above. The connection and trust between them, which comes from the fact they know each other so well, is evident in the intuitive way in which they work together on stage. You will be hard pressed to find a group of dancers more physically or mentally in tune with one another. The UK tour is presented by Dance Consortium, of which Wales Millennium Centre is a member, and supported by Arts Council England.
