Northern Ballet Theatre celebrates its 40th in Cardiff

Northern Ballet Theatre celebrates its 40th in Cardiff Northern Ballet Theatre (NBT) is celebrating its 40th Anniversary and they present A Simple Man as part of an exciting Mixed Bill of dance at New Theatre, from Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 June.

Best known for dramatic, full-length narrative ballets, the company present one of their most famous pieces of work, A Simple Man. Choreographed by the legendary Gillian Lynne, best known for her work on Cats and Phantom of the Opera, the dance is based on the work of artist LS Lowry. This is a rare opportunity for audiences to see his evocative paintings of Northern life brilliantly animated through movement, drama and music.

A Simple Man was originally devised for television and broadcast by the BBC in 1987 winning a BAFTA award for Best TV Arts Programme. The late Christopher Gable (NBT Artistic Director 1989 – 1998) played the role of Lowry.

The production also includes the UK première of As Time Goes By. Conjuring up an era of classic glamour, the dancers perform David Nixon’s stylish choreography to a selection of timeless songs including Sophisticated Swing, How Do You Keep The Music and As Time Goes By.

Angels in the Architecture is set to Aaron Copland’s famous music, Appalachian Spring. It is inspired by the life and beliefs of the Shaker people and the choreography by Mark Godden is a beautiful and moving tribute to the simple yet spiritually motivated lives they led.
