Porthcawl PavilionFriday 19th & Saturday 20th June 7.30pm South Wales based Teflonstage will premiere a new musical on the 19th and 20th of June at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. ‘Lili’ tells the remarkable story of ‘Lili Marlene’, a song instantly disliked by Josef Goebbels and other senior Nazis when it was first released as a recording in Germany just before the outbreak of World War II. Played in error three years later by German Forces Radio Belgrade, this banned song became such an instant hit with soldiers in the field that Field Marshal Rommel demanded it be played before sign-off every night. The singer, Lale Andersen, went from little-known cabaret singer to overnight sensation. The production of ‘Lili’ will raise funds for local Veterans while forming part of Bridgend veterans Armed Forces Day on 27th June, 2009. Following the parade, Veterans will gather in the Bridgend Recreation Centre to enjoy a free performance. Tony Childs-Cutler, co-producer of ‘Lili’ says: “The response has been very encouraging, with support from right across the borough. One sponsor summed up support for this show by saying, ‘I’m more than happy to do something for veterans after what they’ve done for me.’ Oscar Fovarge has written a thought-provoking but also highly entertaining piece. We’re very pleased at being able to stage part of a unique event, even in the context of nationwide events on the same day.” Author Oscar Fovarges says: “The song portrayed everything that the Nazis disliked and everything the common soldier and his loved ones craved. The story of ‘Lili Marlene’ demonstrates that even the most callous leaders could not quell the common humanity of their citizens. Soldiers, their sweethearts and mothers wrote in their millions to Lale Andersen to express their gratitude. Many of the letters were addressed quite simply to ‘Lili Marlene’, c/o Radio Belgrade. Carwyn Jones, Assembly Member for Bridgend, says: "It will always be very important to remember all those from so many parts of the world who fought in British Forces during the Second World War and other conflicts. I am honoured to give my full support to this event" ‘Lili’ also recounts the stories of other famous singers of the time who sang English versions of ‘Lili Marlene’ as well as other hits of the period. Stage portraits include Vera Lynn, Marlene Dietrich, Anne Shelton and Zarah Leander. ‘Lili’ premiere at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, UK 7.30pm on Friday 19th & 20th June, 2009 Tickets £9.50 (concessions £7.50) Box Office: 01656 815995 www.grandpavilion.co.uk |
