Diversionsí Name Is Changing

Diversionsí Name Is Changing After a quarter of a century as Diversions, Wales flagship dance company is today (Tuesday, June 23) changing its name to National Dance Company Wales.

Announcing the new name at The Senedd in Cardiff Bay, Artistic Director Ann Sholem said, “We are proud to take our next steps with this bold new name as the nation’s flagship contemporary dance company, your dance company.

“Our dancers perform all over our nation but also internationally from Ireland to Japan, Cuba to Greece, Italy to Holland. Whether it’s Milan or Milford Haven, Bilbao or Brecon, Llandudno or London, we are committed to bringing inspiring and entertaining dance to all our audiences.

“This is not the end of the journey. We are now on the road to becoming a world-class company and will need the commitment of the nation for us to continue developing as a flagship arts organisation committed to excellence that represents the dynamic, ambitious Wales on the world stage.

“The time is right to bring that excellence, pride and dynamism to our name; National Dance Company Wales.”

The new name is launched under the slogan “Dance is for the nation” and to prove the point Ms Sholem introduced a video commissioned for the event featuring a wide variety of Welsh people, from First Minster Rhodri Morgan, opera star Rebecca Evans, former Royal Harpist Catrin Finch, BBC Cymru Wales weatherman Derek Brockway, ITV Wales presenter Matt Johnson along with a fire crew, Indian restaurant chefs and waiters, school children and office staff dancing for the nation.

The Minister for Heritage Alun Ffred Jones, said: “Diversions had long been recognised as Wales’s national dance company, and this change of name confirms that status. As an internationally-recognised dance company, National Dance Company Wales will, I’m sure, continue to represent and reflect the values that underpin Wales, both at home and aboard.”

Mr Nick Capaldi, Chief Executive of the Arts Council for Wales said, “For many years Diversions has been one of Wales's busiest performing companies taking contemporary dance across Wales, the UK and Europe.

Building on 25 years of patient and careful development, Diversions has established itself as Wales's pre-eminent dance company. It is very much a company that is committed to being for Wales and of Wales, and the change of name reflects that ambition.”

National Dance Company Wales will make its first performances in Cardiff under the new name on Nov 3 and 4 when the Company’s 10 hand-picked dancers perform on the Donald Gordon stage, Wales Millennium Centre. As a resident organisation National Dance Company Wales is celebrating five years at its home the Dance House and is at the heart of Wales Millennium Centre’s birthday celebration performances.

The Company is also on tour throughout Wales, Scotland and England including Cheltenham, Llandudno, Edinburgh, Hereford, Newtown and London.

The company’s website name has now changed to www.ndcwales.co.uk and all Company emails end with @ndcwales.co.uk. For example: info@ndcwales.co.uk.
