Theatre in Wales

The latest theatre, dance and performance news

Forty of Wales’ most talented youngsters take to the New Theatre stage as summerdance 09 returns on Saturday 8 August. Bigger, bolder and brighter than ever, this year the New Theatre’s Arts Active Department and National Dance Company Wales, previously Diversions, join forces with National Youth Dance Wales to bring an exciting new element to this well-established summer school for budding young dancers.

The new and exciting collaboration aims to develop an infrastructure for dancers in Wales that leads to National level. Their hope is to create a clear route for young people to pursue a career in dance and provide a platform for them to showcase their skills whilst learning from professional dancers.

During the summer school, youngsters aged between 14-24 work alongside professional dancers to create an exhilarating new piece of contemporary dance over the course of a week. Developing their dance skills and techniques and creating and rehearsing their own brand new dance production, each of the participants is carefully selected through an audition process.

This is an ideal opportunity for ambitious dancers at the start of their career to collaborate with some of the best professional dancers in Wales. Past students of the summer school have gone on to develop dance careers and attend professional dance schools.

Two stunning new dance pieces are premiered with live music from the WNO Max Department directed by Artistic Associate for National Dance Company Wales, Roy-Campbell-Moore and National Youth Dance Wales is delighted to announce the appointment of award-winning Errol White as its Guest Choreographer for 2009.

Born in Hull and making a successful transition from rugby league, through break-dancing to contemporary dance, Errol White has performed with some of the UK’s best known contemporary dance companies including Phoenix Dance Company, Scottish Dance Theatre and our very own National Dance Company Wales. He has also performed internationally for many years, working alongside a number of distinguished directors and choreographers.

Errol is a previous recipient of the Dance Europe magazine’s Critics Award for Best Male Performer and the Marion North Mentoring Award for Choreography.

Now Artistic Director of his own company (Errol White Dance Company), Errol is creating his own work and forging a reputation as an exciting dancer/choreographer, with a debut tour in Scotland before he travels to Wales to work with NYDW 2009.
