RIBA award for Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Aberystwyth Arts Centre has been awarded a prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects Award in this years Award Scheme - one of only two
buildings in Wales to receive an award. The venue's £3.6 million redevelopment project, designed by architect Peter Roberts, was completed in April 2000. Aberystwyth Arts Centre is part of the University of Wales,Aberystwyth.

Judges for the competition were enthusiastic about the new-look Arts Centre:

'The unusual organic architecture of this new extension has without doubt been a catalyst for injecting new life into the Aberystwyth Arts Centre.
Interior spaces function well and some prominent details, such as the massive mushroom columns in exposed aggregate concrete, give a strong
character to the public areas. There is a real sense of the building being enjoyed by its users.

The design is refreshingly unfamiliar. It gives a sense of regional character and provides a building that looks likely to be well loved for
many years to come.'

All award winners for 2001 go forward to a further competition, to be chosen as the overall best building of the year and the prestigious Stirling Prize.

The winner of the Prize will be announced in October 2001.
