Up-and-Coming Directors See Plays Staged at Sherman

Up-and-Coming Directors See Plays Staged at Sherman Three up-and-coming directors will see their productions on the Sherman stage this September as part of a year-long training initiative at the Cardiff venue.

Sita Calvert-Ennals, Sarah Bickerton and Bridget Keehan have been mentored by established directors as part of the year-long course, and have assistant directed on several Sherman Cymru productions as part of the initiative. Directing their own plays will be the final part of the course.

Sita Calvert-Ennals grew up in Penarth, and started her theatrical career as a member of the Sherman Youth Theatre in 1994. She will direct Frozen, a hard-hitting play about a mother whose daughter is abducted and killed by a serial killer. Sita says:

“It seems fitting to come back to Sherman 15 years later and carry on training towards the next stage of my career. It’s been an amazing year of learning for me. I feel like my practice as a director has deepened on so many levels. I can’t wait to try out what I’ve learnt.”

Sarah Bickerton, from Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in north Powys, directs A Place with the Pigs, which is based on a true story of a war deserter from the Soviet Army who spent 41 years in self-imposed exile in a pigsty, and Bridget Keehan, who has previously directed productions at Cardiff prison, directs The City by Martin Crimp, which originally opened at the Royal Court in 2008.

The Director’s Training Scheme was set up last year with Living Pictures in association with Sherman Cymru to assist directors in the training. Living Pictures is run by husband and wife team Elen Bowman, who is also Associate Director at Sherman Cymru, and Robert Bowman, an established theatre actor and director.

Frozen, A Place with the Pigs and The City will be on at Sherman from 9 – 12 September – call the Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or go to www.shermancymru.co.uk to see the full schedule and book tickets. Tickets are £8 or £16 for all three plays. There will also be a programme of workshops and discussions for budding directors and theatre-makers – contact Elen Bowman at livingpictures@btopenworld.com for more information and to register.
